Ubuntu 22 has officially been installed on my HP Pro Book something-or-other!
The weekend is a bit of a blur but, thanks to the fact that I texted my son and his bestie a photo of my laptop linux install while it was in progress, I can definitively say that it was Saturday afternoon when I installed Ubuntu on my laptop. Thus far, I’ve uncovered two “real problems” –
- After the installation was complete, the laptop wouldn’t boot. It complained about not being able to find an operating system. This was fixed by tweaking my BIOS settings.
- My windows system(s) don’t show up in the network neighborhood on my Linux laptop. Not a deal breaker by any means, since I figured out an alternate way to access Windows shares, but it still would be a nice-to-have. Maybe I’ll get there at some point.
I am now in the position to identify and learn GUI-based applications on the Linux platform since, up to this point, I’ve been dealing with linux on the command line only. Thus far I’ve discovered and deployed Remmina for SSH/RDP connectivity to other machines, and that’s about it. Running good ol’ Firefox for web browsing and, honestly, browsing and hitting my other boxes have been the only two operations I’ve thus far performed.
As I continue to mess with it, I’m sure other applications may make themselves known but let’s be honest – when the laptop was Windows, I was basically browsing the web and hitting my other boxes so I’m pretty much where I was with it already. I do want to see how it performs playing movies/etc from my Plex server so that will likely be next.
Oh, and I must brag a bit and note that I used my Ventoy USB stick for the installation. That worked swimmingly as well!
Nice. Now that you mention it I do seem to remember an issue (inconvenience?) with shared network resources when I experimented with it. I’ll give it another go.
